Why a pinball machine valuation is important

The value of a pinball machine can vary greatly over time depending on factors such as rarity, condition of the machine, and popularity of the model. An valuation is essential if you are considering selling your pinball machine, insuring it or simply want to know its market value.

An accurate appraisal can help you with:

How I Appraise a Pinball Machine

At Funfixers I base my valuation on various factors that influence the market value of a pinball machine:
General condition:
I inspect the physical and technical condition of the pinball machine. I look at the wear of the playfield and in particular kickout holes (holes in the playfield where the ball can fall into), damage to the cabinet/legs/translite/playfield glass plate, general functioning and the functioning of moving parts on the playfield e.g. elevators and (moving) targets and the condition of the displays. In addition, of course (if present) the printed circuit boards are inspected for; general condition, (battery) damage and whether they all have the same number.
Rarity
The rarity of the model plays a big part in the value. Some machines are produced in limited editions and are therefore more valuable.
Age and origin
Oudere flipperkasten, vooral die uit de jaren ’70 en ’80, hebben vaak meer verzamelwaarde, vooral als deze goed onderhouden zijn.
Originality
In de loop der jaren kunnen er onderdelen toegevoegd zijn of verwijderd zijn uit de flipperkast, dit wil niet zeggen dat de flipperkast dan ook meer waard wordt. Een voorbeeld daarvan zijn LED’s en kleurendisplays. Ook wordt er gekeken of bij een eventuele restauratie het origineel als leidraad heeft gediend. Zo zijn er bijvoorbeeld grote verschillen in kwaliteit van zogenaamde ‘cabinet decals’ (stickers voor de behuizing van de flipperkast) en zit er ook verschil in kwaliteit van bijvoorbeeld aftermarket translites (kopkast-poster).
Make and model
Brands like Bally, Williams, Stern and Jersey Jack are household names in the pinball world, and certain models can be worth significantly more than others.
Working parts
Machines that are fully functional and free of defects will naturally have a higher value than non-functioning or defective pinball machines.
