Why is maintenance important?

Pinball machines are made up of complex mechanical and electronic parts. Over time, these parts can wear out, become dirty, or simply seize up. Regular maintenance helps to:

  • Prevent pollution: Dust and dirt can damage the contact blades, switches, relays, optosensors, buttons and other mechanical parts of your pinball machine.
  • Reduce wear and tear: By detecting and repairing wear at an early stage, you can prevent expensive repairs in the long term.
  • To improve gaming experience: Well-maintained pinball machines ensure smooth gameplay without glitches or unexpected errors.

What does pinball maintenance include?

My pinball maintenance program includes a thorough check of all major components. This includes:
Checking the batteries (if present)
These can leak. Batteries may be a maximum of 2 years old.
Cleaning the playing field
Remove dust and dirt to ensure the balls roll smoothly across the playing field.
Checking the flippers
Inspecting the flippers to ensure they respond quickly and powerfully. This includes inspecting and replacing the e.o.s. switches, coil stops and plungers. Coil sleeves are always replaced.
Lights and displays
The GI (general lighting) and feature lights (flashing lights) are checked and I check that the displays are working correctly.
Mechanical parts
Adjusting moving parts such as switches, bumpers, and sling-shots.
Electronics
I check if there is a software update, if there are no burnt connectors or headers, if capacitors are not bulging and if connectors are connected properly.
